Amsterdam has long been recognised as one of the world's most important internet hubs. But that position didn't happen overnight. It is the result of decades of collaboration, technical innovation and a shared belief in an open, well-connected internet ecosystem.

In the latest edition of Quest Magazine, AMS-IX CEO Peter van Burgel joins internet pioneer Kees Neggers to reflect on the origins of the Dutch internet, the growth of Amsterdam as a global connectivity hub, and the choices that will shape its future.

The feature explores how a small group of pioneers helped lay the foundations for today's internet and how Amsterdam grew into a location where hundreds of networks choose to interconnect. It also looks beyond the history books, raising timely questions about Europe's digital infrastructure, resilience and sovereignty in an increasingly connected world.

For AMS-IX, these are more than historical milestones. They remain highly relevant as demand for connectivity continues to grow and the internet becomes an increasingly critical part of our economy and society. Maintaining a strong digital ecosystem requires continued investment, collaboration and a long-term vision for Europe's internet infrastructure.

Whether you're interested in the evolution of the internet, the role of Amsterdam as a connectivity hub, or the future of Europe's digital infrastructure, this interview offers valuable perspectives from two people who have experienced that journey from different angles.
